CVIP Announces the 4th Annual CVIP Technology Development Fund

CVIP is pleased to announce the 4th annual solicitation for the 07 CVIP Technology Development Fund. The purpose of the Fund is to assist faculty and the CVIP offices with the commercial development of important technologies discovered on our campuses. The Fund was created as part of the Universitys science and technology activities. To respond to the increased demand and successful outcomes, we are very pleased to announce that thanks to President Wilsons generosity and his commitment to science and technology, our budget for the Fund has been significantly augmented by a contribution by the Presidents Office. As a result, this year our grants will be up to $30,000 per project for direct project expense, and we anticipate making approximately 8 awards, double the number made the last round.

Board of Trustees Approves the UMass Co-Investment Fund

The UMass Board of Trustees have approved the creation of the UMass Co-Investment Fund permitting the University to provide equity financing to early stage companies founded on technologies developed at UMass. The fund must be co-invested with a qualified external venture capital firm and the initial investment must be at the seed or Series A round. The program will be administered by the Executive Director CVIP and all investments require the approval of the University Treasury and the University's Investment Committee. The first investment from the fund was recently made in the company Polnox Inc. (www.polnox.com).

Massachusetts Technology Transfer Center

The Massachusetts Technology Transfer Center (MTTC) was created in 2004 as a program in the Massachusetts Economic Stimulus Bill. Its goal is to support technology transfer activities from public and private research institutions to companies in Massachusetts. To achieve this goal, the Center works with technology transfer offices at Massachusetts research institutions; faculty, researchers, and students who have commercially promising ideas; and companies across the Commonwealth. The MTTC is headed by its Director, Dr. Abigail Barrow, and manages a full range of program including training for entrepreneurs, technology shows cases for specific industries, technology development grants and mentoring of early stage companies.
